  • ralphs

one of the things i wanted to change in order to have a more "green" lifestyle is to use canvas bags for groceries instead of paper/plastic bags. i just discovered that ralphs takes plastic bags to recycle. i just went during lunch to recycle a few 30 plastic bags that i had stuffed in the kitchen drawer. i only took the ralphs ones thinking that they would only take the ralphs bags, but now i'll have to go back and recycle the others that are still in the drawer. it's been a pretty easy transition since i do most of the food shopping and my parents don't use the plastic bags for anything except to carry things. i've bought a few shopping bags (greenshopper bag from bed, bath and beyond for $4.99) and have started using those instead. you can also find shopping bags at www.reusablebags.com. ralphs also are selling canvas bags - 2 for $3 (good deal). ralphs also will give you 5 bonus rewards points every time you use your own bag instead of taking their plastic bags. you have to sign up for the new card - they can link the old card with the new. you earn $5 for every 500 points. each $1 spent is 1 point.

    happy shopping!

  • the drowsy chaperone

a few of us went to see "the drowsy chaperone" musical at the ahmanson theatre. it was really good and we all had a good time. i've been wanting to see this one for a while now and i'm so glad we got to go. as we were looking through the program right before the show started, i noticed one of the pictures of the cast member. it was none other than jonathan crombie! you probably don't recognize the name, but he's most famous for his role as gilbert blythe in the anne of green gables series. yes! i was so ecstatic!

here's us in front of the fountain at the ahmanson theatre. stephen and i ran through the fountain, well, stephen did and i barely went through it. it was lots of fun.

  • free CFLs

Million Lights Project is offering Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs for Free to the first 1 million requests.

i also received 2 free CFLs from the city of anaheim a while ago to help in the process of conserving electricity. yesterday i bought 5 CFLs and will be changing out the bulbs in my house today. i started my own recycling system in my house, bought 2 bins for cans/bottles and paper. yesterday i went to trader joe's and brought in my canvas bag instead of taking their paper bags for my groceries. hopefully i can implement the other things on my list.

    other tips/ideas:

    • rain barrel/bin - collect the rain and use it to water your plants, trees, pets.
    • car washes - i know that it's definitely cheaper washing your car yourself, but you end up wasting a lot of water, washing your car at a professional car wash will save on water, some places will recycle their water instead of letting it go to the sewer system (ask before you go), if you do wash your car at home, try washing on your lawn so that the water doesn't go to waste, but make sure you use cleaners that won't harm your lawn or the environment
    • ride a bike - instead of driving, ride a bicycle (i will be getting one this week, hopefully) to local places like the grocery store or target. this is a great way to save on gas and get exercise

    enjoy! happy tuesday!
